Ink vs. Toner: What’s The Difference?

When you are printing, you are going to be using either ink or toner. Which you are using will depend on what type of printer you are using. Toner is used in laser printers while ink is used in inkjet and dot matrix printer, but which is better?

Toner

Toner is used in laser printers which are mainly the large office printers used in offices and businesses around the world. Toner is simply a fine powder that is heated and shot onto the paper to form the image. The reason this is the choice of businesses who do a lot of printing is simple; you get more prints. Discount toner cartridges will typically cost about the same as ink cartridges but will last several times as long. Ink is very inefficient by comparison.

Ink

The advantages of ink are simply cost of the printer and quality of the prints. Inkjet printers typically produce better quality prints. This makes them the better choice for photos or other pictures that you will want the best possible quality for. You can also use photo paper with an inkjet printer. A laser printer will melt the coating on the photo paper and ruin the printer. Since these are usually large, business level machines this can result in thousands of dollars in damage, so never do it.

Which is Better?

Each one serves its own purpose. Inkjet printers provide a better quality print but have a much higher cost per print. This can be as much as twenty cents or more for some printers. Laser printers, on the other hand, have a much lower cost. Since they are usually only printing in black and white, a laser printer can have a cost to print as low as two or three cents. While this may not seem like much, it does add up fast, especially for a business that is doing thousands of prints a day.
